Per Kirkeby: Poem

The green leaf
cries out in the black winter
granulated with muck and dirt
Miss Melancholy looks out of the window
displacements of silence
mirror image forebodings
The window’s unrolling light
loses its way but before that the bars make a cross

From Maletid, 1989

translated from Danish by David McDuff
